Description (Japanese): 日本で最も大きな葉をもつカエデである。葉の表面が縮緬状。葉裏の基部の毛の生えぐあいが異なるものがある。葉が厚く木の下が薄暗くなる。花は一つの花序に雄花、両性花が混じるものと雌雄異株もある。基本形はvar. australeとされている。鉢植えをする場合、皿で受けて水を張っておくとよい。相当の水分を与えないと成長が遅くなる。
Description: This maple has the largest leaves in japan. The leaf surface is of silky-creped texture. There is one with different hairy type found on the base of the leaf underside. As the leaf is thick, it becomes very dark under this tree. There are both dioecious tree and monoecious one with male flowers. The type is called A. nipponicum var. australe. Its growth becomes slow when not given a consistent supply of water.
