Description (Japanese): 九州〜近畿地方では高所に自生する。水分は欲しがる。樹形は直立、8mにもなる。先の枝は細く重鋸歯で葉質は薄い。葉形は、ヤマモミジ、オオイタヤメイゲツの小さい葉と見間違うことがある。果実はつきにくいのか、採取できる機会が少ない。園芸種は葉形と秋の紅葉で選ばれているが、斑入りは見ない。栽培すると夏の暑さで、葉を巻くことがある。秋まで持たせると奇麗な紅葉が楽しめる。

Description: In Kyusyu and Kinki districts, this grows wild at high elevations. This is a water-loving species. It attains 8m high with an upright form. A plant with branches thinner to the top and the thin leaves have double-serrated margins. The leaf shape is similar to the small leaf of Acer amoenum var. matsumurae and A. shirasawanum, so that this species is sometimes mistaken for them. Collecting seeds of this species is not easy, because of probable poor fruit setting. The cultivars of this species so far are selected by leaf shape and autumn foliage color, but not yet from leaf variegation. In summer, the heat may cause upward rolling leaf margins. Without the leaf roll in summer, we can see a wonderful foliage color.
