・各刺座には35〜60本の細くて白い縁刺がある。基本亜種 subsp. laui は中刺がないのに対し、この亜種は最大12本のやや硬く白か黄色の中刺がある。花は春に咲き、紅紫色。
・種内分類群を区別しない見解もあり、Plants of the World Online (Kew Gardens) では M. laui の異名としている。
