Description (Japanese): 日本で唯一常緑のカエデ。15mにもなる木で沖縄に産するが、今やレッドデータリスト植物。冬–5℃になる土地で、年中日陰でも冬を越す強い植物。地植えにすると成長が早い。鉢植えで室内でもよく育つ。葉は皮質で鋸歯はない。葉裏は粉白色。若木の葉は３裂になる。芽出し直後の葉は赤茶色になる木もある。雌雄同株。花は散房花序で多くの花が咲くが、雄花が多く混じるので、果実は少ない。６月頃、果実の翼が赤く色づくが、一週間ぐらいで後、緑色になる。
Description: This is the only evergreen maple species in Japan, native to Okinawa and grows up to 15m high. It is now included in the Red Data List. This is a fast growing and vigorous tree under shade condition, even at –5°C in winter, and also is grown easily in containers. The leaves are of laurel-texture, entire on the leaf edge, and powdery white on the underside. Leaves of young trees sometimes are 3-lobed. Just after the leaf-flush, the leaves are reddish brown. Monoecious flowers are borne in a compound umbel inflorescens. The ratio of male flowers is relatively high, so fruiting is poor. The wings of fruits are red in June, but they turn to green after one week.
