description_en: Genus of about 500 species of shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and a few annuals and biennials, found through-out the N. hemisphere, in habitats ranging from meadows to mountain screes. They are cultivated for their attractive, usually 5-petalled, saucer-to cup-shaped, occasionally star-shaped, white, yellow, orange, pink, or red flowers; they are produced over long periods from spring to autumn, either singly or, more often, in cymes or terminal panicles. The alternate leaves may be pinnate or 3- to 7-palmate, and are often strongly veined and wrinkled. The shrubby potentillas, mainly derived from P. fruticosa, are excellent long-flowering plants for a mixed or shrub border and for low hedges. Many species are also suitable for rock gardens, raised beds, or mixed borders. Most clump-forming hybrids, derived mainly from P. atrosanguinea and P. nepalensis, are valued for their single, semi-double, or double, mainly red or yellow flowers providing summer and autumn colour in herbaceous borders; they have strawberry-like, 5-palmate, mid- to dark green leaves, 5-10cm (2-4in) long, conspicuously veined and toothed.
