description_en: Genus of about 70 species of evergreen shrubs and trees found in habitats ranging from rocky hills to woodland in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Central America. The leaves are opposite, linear-lance-shaped to almost rounded, entire, and leathery. In spring, small, axillary, star-shaped, yellow-green flowers of both sexes are borne on the same plant; several male flowers, with conspicuous yellow anthers, surround one female. Boxes are grown mainly for their foliage, which may be variegated, and for their ability to withstand clipping, which makes them ideal for hedging and topiary. Use dwarf boxes for edging, for ground cover, or in a rock garden. Contact with box sap may irritate skin.
hardiness_en: Fully hardy to frost hardy.
