description_en: Genus of 20 or more species of spherical, rarely elongated, simple, occasionally branching, perennial cacti from coastal areas of Central and South America, Cuba, and the West Indies. They have prominently spined ribs. As plants mature, a cephalium, consisting of a mass of wool and bristles, which in some species gradually elongates to over 1m (3ft) tall, forms on the crown of each stem. The plant body apparently does not develop further once the cephalium appears. Spreading, funnel-shaped, diurnal flowers are borne on the cephalium in summer, followed by berry-like fruits with glossy, black-coated seeds. Where temperatures fall below 16°C (61°F), grow in a warm greenhouse. Elsewhere, grow in a desert garden.
