description_en: Genus of 60 species of tree-like or bushy, perennial cacti, branching from the stems or the bases, found in warm, humid, moist areas of Mexico, Central and South America, and the West Indies. The many ribs have spiny, generally densely woolly, hairy areoles, sometimes as long as 5cm (2in), the wool forming skeins covering the ribs. In summer, nocturnal, tubular to bell-shaped flowers are borne from pseudocephaliums, from prominent areoles, or at the crowns, followed by fleshy, fig-like fruits. Below 15°C (59°F), grow in a warm greenhouse. In warmer areas, use as a focal point on a lawn or in a courtyard.
