description_en: Genus of about 12 species of rosette-forming, perennial succulents from rocky grasslands to 2,000m (6,500ft) high, in S. USA and Mexico. Bell- or star-shaped flowers, each with 5-7 outward-spreading petals, are produced in axillary cymes, mainly in spring or summer. Where temperatures drop below 5°C (41°F), grow in a temperate greenhouse or as houseplants; elsewhere, plant in a desert garden.
