description_en: Genus of about 25 species of tree-like or shrubby, sometimes clump-forming, perennial cacti found on low hillsides in the USA (Arizona), Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, and the West Indies. The prominently ribbed stems are often densely spined. The funnel- or bell-shaped, usually nocturnal flowers, borne in spring or summer, are followed by ovoid, fleshy, spiny fruits. Where temperatures fall below 13°C (55°F), grow in a warm greenhouse. In warmer climates, use in a desert garden.
