They have alternate, pinnatifid to pinnatisect, occasionally simple and shallowly lobed, spiny-margined leaves, and thistle-like, yellow, pink, purple, or violet flower-heads. C. tinctorius is the only widely cultivated species, and has been used for centuries as a source of red and yellow dye. It is a good "everlasting" flower for use in dried flower arrangements and is also excellent for growing in a border or herb garden.
