description_en: Genus of about 20 species of evergreen trees and shrubs often found in dry, rocky places in the Mediterranean and Africa to C. Asia and Australasia. They have opposite, leathery leaves, which may be entire or toothed, and produce terminal or axillary panicles of small, 4-lobed, white or off-white flowers; these are followed by edible, ovoid or spherical fruits. Thriving only in areas with a Mediterranean or similar climate, O. europaea. the only species cultivated, is of great economic importance for its fruit (olives) and the oil extracted from them. Grow as a specimen tree or in a border; in frost-prone areas, grow in a cool greenhouse or conservatory, or at the base of a sunny, sheltered wall.
