description_en: Genus of about 5 species of low-growing, clump-forming, evergreen bamboos from deciduous woodland and valley slopes in China and Japan. They have slowly spreading rhizomes and slender canes, slightly flattened on one side and slightly bent at the nodes, creating a zigzag effect. Each node bears 2-5 short branches with narrowly ovate to elliptic, tessellated leaves. Grow for their foliage in a mixed border, a gravel planting, or a container on a patio, or, if densely planted, as ground cover.
