description_en: Genus of about 50 species of evergreen, epiphytic or terrestrial orchids occurring in coastal regions up to altitudes of 2,600m (8,300ft), often in oak woodland, from Mexico and Central America to Brazil and Argentina. They have robust or slender, elongated pseudo-bulbs, each bearing 1 or 2 (sometimes 3) semi-rigid, narrowly oval, club-shaped, oblong, strap-shaped, or linear leaves. Brightly coloured flowers are usually produced in racemes from the apex of the pseudobulb. Many inter-generic hybrids derived from crosses with Cattleya and other related genera are also available.
