description_en: Genus of about 7 species of rosette-forming, evergreen, terrestrial perennials (bromeliads) from Brazil, where they usually grow in coastal shrubland and shaded forest, to 600m (2,000ft) high. They are cultivated for their foliage and flowers: the strap-shaped, spiny-margined, fairly stiff leaves are mostly scaly, especially beneath; the tubular, blue or violet flowers are borne in cylindrical heads on long, slender flower-stalks. Where temperatures fall below 15°C (59°F)., grow in an indoor garden; in warmer climates, they are suitable for growing outdoors in a desert garden.
