Distribution en: Temperate to Mexico, NW. & S. Africa
Description en: Genus of about 50 species of rhizomatous, occasionally stoloniferous perennials from mountainous habitats, streamsides, moist meadows, and woodland in arctic and temperate regions of Europe, Asia, New Zealand, North and South America, and Africa. They have unequally pinnate to pinnatisect, wrinkled leaves, the leaflets with toothed or scalloped margins; the leaves are mainly borne in basal rosettes. The erect, open, 5-petalled, saucer- to bowl-shaped, usually upright but occasionally pendent flowers, in shades of cream, yellow, orange, pink, or red, are solitary or borne in cymes, and bloom from late spring to summer. The stems of G. chiloense hybrids tend to be more branched than those of G. coccineum hybrids. The smaller geums are suitable for growing in a rock garden; the larger can be grown at the front of a border.
Hardiness en: Fully hardy.
Cultivation en:
Propagation en: Sow seed in containers in a cold frame, or divide, in autumn or spring. G. ’Lady Stratheden’ and G. ’Mrs. J. Bradshaw’ come virtually true from seed, but most of the larger geums hybridize readily in gardens.
Pests en: Sawfly larvae may cause damage to leaves.
