They are valued for their leaves, which are pinnate or resemble a fish’s tail, often arching, either tufted or alternate, and borne on erect and flexible, sometimes scandent stems. Insignificant, 3-petalled flowers are borne in spikes or panicles, followed by small fruits, 0.6-1.5cm (1/4-1/2in) across. In frost-prone areas, grow as houseplants, or in containers or borders in a warm conservatory or greenhouse. In warmer areas, grow in a shaded border or courtyard.
