They have square stems and opposite, oblong to ovate-lance-shaped, almost stalkless leaves with entire, usually hairy to bristly margins. They are cultivated for their shallowly saucer-shaped flowers, each with a short tube, 4 widely parted petals, and 8 prominent stamens, borne singly or in terminal cymes in summer. Grow in a sheltered border, bog garden, or wild garden.
