distribution_en:

description_en: Genus of about 170 species of rhizomatous or shrubby perennials, a small number of which are succulent, from lowlands in the Arabian Peninsula, N.E. Africa, Madagascar, India, and tropical South and Central America. In many species, the rhizome is thick and tuber-like, and the caudex fleshy and thick, with leaves that are sometimes scale-like, especially on the upper nodes. The insignificant, petalless flowers and, later, ovoid green fruits are embedded in disc-shaped receptacles, produced from the upper leaf axils. In frost-prone areas, grow in a warm greenhouse for their bonsai-like growth, or use as ground cover beneath greenhouse staging. Elsewhere, grow in a desert garden. All parts are harmful if ingested.

hardiness_en: Frost tender.
