description_en: Genus of approximately 150 species of mainly evergreen, epiphytic orchids found in the USA and from Mexico and the West Indies south to tropical N. South America, occurring in forest from sea level to 3,000m (10,000ft). They have fleshy pseudobulbs, which may be rounded or elongated, and usually 2 narrowly oblong to strap-shaped or linear to elliptic, fleshy or leathery leaves. Attractive, variable, often fragrant flowers are produced from the apexes of the pseudobulbs, mainly in late spring or summer but often intermittently throughout the year.
