description_en: Genus of about 20 species of deciduous shrubs and trees found in woodland and scrub from S.E. Europe to E. Asia. They are grown for their often pyramidal or conical panicles of small, tubular, usually very fragrant flowers, which may be white, pink, almost red to magenta, lilac (light purplish pink), or blue. They have opposite, entire, lance-shaped to rounded, usually ovate, rarely pinnate leaves. Most garden cultivars are grouped under S. vulgaris. Grow lilacs in a shrub border or as specimen trees.
