description_en: Genus of about 50 species of erect, bushy, strongly aromatic annuals and herbaceous perennials. They are found on hot, dry slopes and in valley bottoms from New Mexico, USA, to Argentina; one species occurs in Africa. The many hybrids and cultivars are derived mainly from T. erecta, T. patula, and T. tenuifolia. The almost fern-like leaves are usually opposite, pinnatifid to pinnate, with conspicuous glands, and mid- to dark green. Daisy-like or double, carnation-like flowerheads are produced singly or in cyme-like clusters from late spring to autumn. Germination from the large, easily handled seeds is rapid, and blooms appear within a few weeks of sowing. The African marigolds are excellent for formal bedding, whereas the French, Afro-French, and Signet marigolds are more suitable for the edge of a mixed border. All are good in containers and provide long-lasting cut flowers. Contact with the foliage may aggravate skin allergies. Four main hybrid groups are in cultivation
