Description en: Genus of one species of very tall, fast-growing, monoecious, evergreen, coniferous tree from coastal forest in California and Oregon, USA. It has thick, soft bark, whorled branches when young, and yew-like foliage. Useful where a tall, evergreen tree is needed quickly; it thrives in climates with cool, damp summers, and is tolerant of pollution and wind. It is one of the few conifers that will coppice, or make new shoots from the base if cut down. The genus contains the tallest tree and also some of the oldest trees in the world.
