description_en: Genus of about 100 species of evergreen subshrubs, climbers, and trailing and semi-trailing perennials, some of which are epiphytic, from subtropical forest in the Himalayas, S. China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and New Guinea. They have ovate to lance-shaped, leathery, fleshy leaves in opposite pairs or whorls. From summer to winter, vividly coloured flowers are produced in pairs from the leaf axils near the stem tips, or in terminal corymbs or clusters. The flowers often have prominent calyces, sometimes in a contrasting colour, and long, tubular, often curved, sometimes hooded corollas, with protruding stamens and styles. In frost-prone areas, grow in hanging baskets in a warm conservatory or greenhouse; compact species are good houseplants. In tropical or subtropical areas, grow outdoors in a shady site.
