They have opposite, leathery leaves and terminal or axillary cymes or panicles of saucer-shaped, 4-or 5-petalled flowers, each with a prominent boss of stamens. These are followed by fleshy, spherical to pear-shaped or oblong, red, purple, or white berries. The dried flower buds of S. aromaticum are the cloves of commerce. In frost-prone areas, grow in a temperate or warm greenhouse. In warmer climates, grow in a shrub border.
