中刺が鉤爪状になる種が多いが、必ずというわけではない。Mammillaria s.s. は鉤爪状になるものが少なく、これが2属を見分ける特徴の一つ。
Breslin (2022) では (Lophphora, (Strombocactus, (Ariocarpus, Turbinicarpus)), (Cumarinia, (Mammillaria, (Cochemiea, Coryphantha)))); の関係が得られている。
