2000年代以降、広義のEchinopsisとして扱われていたが、分子系統解析により広義のEchinopsis内のクレードとして復活し、2023-08時点では正名だった。Schlumpberger & Renner (2012) ではHelianthocereus clade としている。
しかし、さらに解析が進み、2026年2月にはLobivia, Trichocereusと共に再びEchinopsisに含まれるようになった。
