description_en: Genus of about 140 species of evergreen and deciduous shrubs and trees from woodland in mainly tropical and subtropical regions. They have opposite, simple leaves and bear dense, axillary cymes or panicles of numerous tiny, white, pink, red, or purple flowers in summer. Grown mainly for their clusters of small but often highly coloured, spherical, bead-like fruits, 2-4mm (1/16-1/8in) across, they are ideal for a shrub border; they fruit most prolifically in long, hot summers and if planted in groups. In frost-prone areas, grow tender and half-hardy species in a cool greenhouse and move outdoors in summer.
hardiness_en: Fully hardy to frost tender.

propagation_en: Sow seed in containers in a cold frame in autumn or spring. Root softwood cuttings in spring, or semi-ripe cuttings with bottom heat in summer.
