Description en: Genus of 18 species of bulbous or rhizomatous, deciduous perennials from grassland and open woodland in North America, Mexico, and N.E. Asia. They are cultivated for their upright, terminal racemes or panicles of small, star-shaped, 6-tepalled, greenish white or yellowish white flowers, produced in summer. The leaves are mainly basal and linear, and often folded or keeled. Good for a shady border or woodland garden; grow Z. fremontii in a bulb frame. All parts are highly toxic if ingested.
