description_en: Genus of about 25 species of tuberous, evergreen perennials found on grassy slopes in South Africa. They have bright red tubers and large, broadly linear, pleated, parallel-veined, erect, basal leaves, sheathing one another at their bases and arranged in 2 opposite rows. They are grown for their large, terminal panicles of irregular, flat, star-shaped yellow flowers, with 6 tepals, borne on leafless stems. In frost-prone areas, grow in a cool greenhouse; for optimum flowering, plant directly into a greenhouse border. In frost-free areas, grow in a sheltered border.
