description_en: Genus of about 15 species of evergreen, rhizomatous perennials from tropical forest in Malaysia, Indonesia, New Guinea, and N.E. Australia. They are cultivated mainly for their spectacular inflorescences of red bracts. The obovate leaves, to 15cm (6in) long, are spirally arranged on bamboo-like stems. In frost-prone areas, grow in a warm greenhouse; in humid tropical climates, grow in a shady border.
