description_en: Genus of 40 species of erect, evergreen perennials or soft-stemmed shrubs occurring in forest margins in tropical and southern Africa and Madagascar. They are cultivated for their dense, terminal spikes of 2-lipped, tubular, deep blue flowers. The leaves are opposite or in whorls, linear, lance-shaped, or ovate, and are rather pungent when crushed. In frost-prone areas, grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory. In warmer areas, they are suitable for growing in a shrub border.
