description_en: Genus of 2 species of erect, rosette-forming, thistle-like annuals or biennials from the mountains of E. Africa and from stony slopes, steppes, and thickets in W. Africa, the Mediterranean, and Europe to C. Asia. They have broad, shallowly to deeply lobed, obovate to inversely lance-shaped, spiny, light to dark green leaves, and bear spherical, single, purple-pink flowerheads, enclosed in spiny bracts. Cultivated for their foliage and flowers, silybums are suitable for growing in a mixed or herbaceous border or a gravel garden.
