The leaves are alternate (occasionally appearing whorled on short, lateral shoots), entire, linear-oblong to narrowly obovate, and mid- or blue-green. Racemes of tiny, cup-shaped, white or yellowish green flowers are produced in summer; the flowers are usually either male or female. Grow S. laevigata for its foliage and flowers in a mixed or shrub border.
