description_en: Genus of a single species of virtually evergreen, rhizomatous perennial from damp water-meadows and streambanks in southern Africa. Kaffir lilies are cultivated for their showy, gladiolus-like spikes of open cup-shaped flowers, which are produced from late summer to early winter. They are suitable for growing at the front of a herbaceous or mixed border, at the base of a warm, sunny wall, or in a small courtyard garden. S. coccinea and its cultivars are also effective grown en masse in large containers in a cool greenhouse, where they will flower for long periods during the winter months. Excellent for cut flowers.
