distribution_en:
description_en: Genus of 12-20 species of evergreen trees and shrubs from forest and scrub in Tasmania (Australia), New Zealand, and Chile. Cultivated for their upright habit, foliage, and fruits, they are valuable architectural or specimen plants. The alternate, simple or palmate, entire or variously toothed leaves may vary greatly in shape, depending on the age of the plant. Inconspicuous, 4- or 5-petalled green flowers are borne mainly in winter, in terminal or, less commonly, lateral umbels, clusters, racemes, or mixtures of these. Male and female flowers usually grow on separate plants; both are required to produce the fruits, which are drupe-like, each with 2-5 stones. Grow in a warm, sheltered shrub border. In frost-prone areas, grow tender species in a cool greenhouse or conservatory.
