description_en: Genus of one very variable species of erect to spreading, basally branching, hairy annual from grassland, desert margins, and chaparral in W. USA. It has almost stalkless, stem-clasping, entire leaves, sometimes borne in small whorls. It is grown for its short-lived, poppy-like flowers, each with a central boss of flattened stamen filaments, borne in profusion where the climate is neither too hot nor too humid. Suitable for an annual border and rock gardens.
