They have alternate, fleshy, light to mid- or grey-green leaves in very variable shapes, sometimes forming rosettes. Diurnal, bell- or star-shaped flowers are borne in one-sided cymes, in spring or summer. Where temperatures drop below 7°C (45°F), grow in a temperate greenhouse. In warmer areas, use in a desert garden.
