Distribution en: W. Canada to W. U.S.A.
Description en: Genus of one species of deciduous shrub found in forest and canyons in W. North America. It is grown for its simple, alternate, glossy leaves, and its pendent racemes of bell-shaped flowers, both of which appear very early in the year (it is one of the first plants to come into leaf, often in late winter). Male and female flowers are borne on separate plants and both must be grown to bear the small, black, plum-like fruit. Grow in a shrub border or woodland garden.

Propagation en: Sow seed in a seedbed as soon as ripe. Take greenwood cuttings in early summer. Transplant suckers in autumn.
