Distribution en: New Guinea to SW. Pacific, Temp. S. America

Description en: Genus of 20 or more species of ever-green or deciduous trees and shrubs from the S. hemisphere (New Guinea and New Caledonia to Australia, New Zealand, and South America), where they occur as forest trees from sea level to the mountains. Leaves are alternate, simple, entire or toothed, sometimes with wavy margins. Flowers and fruits are inconspicuous. They are grown for their habit and foliage, and, in the case of deciduous species, for their attractive autumn colour. Grow as specimen trees in a large garden or woodland garden. In the wild, they often attain much greater heights than in cultivation.
