Alternate or spiralling, narrowly to broadly ovate, oblong, or lance-shaped, mid- to blue-green or silvery leaves are usually crowded and overlap to varying degrees. Tubular flowers enclosed in overlapping, leaf-like bracts, often with protruding perianth segments and styles, are borne terminally or in the upper leaf axils. In frost-prone climates, grow in a cool or temperate greenhouse. Elsewhere, grow in a shrub border.
