Description en: Genus of one species of deciduous tree or large shrub found in woodland and thickets in mountainous regions of S.E. Europe and S.W. Asia. It is grown for its attractive, spreading habit, its colourful autumn foliage, its bowl-shaped flowers, borne singly at the ends of short shoots, and its flattened, apple-like fruit, which have prominent, persistent calyces. Grow as a specimen tree. The fruit are edible following the first frosts in late autumn, when they are well-ripened and partly rotten.
