description_en: Genus of 6 species of conical, monoecious, evergreen, coniferous trees and shrubs from forest in New Zealand, New Caledonia, and South America. In the past, species of Austrocedrus and Calocedrus were included in the genus Libocedrus. The linear juvenile leaves and usually scale-like adult leaves are arranged in sets of 2 pairs, one on either side of the shoot (spreading pair), and one above and below (facial pair), forming 4 rows. Female cones are solitary, ovoid, and usually 4-scaled, with 2 pairs of enlarged, bract-like leaves at the bases; male cones are small, oblong, and borne at the tips of short shoots. Grow as specimen trees. In frost-prone areas, grow half-hardy species in a sheltered site or in a cool greenhouse.
