description_en: Genus of 5 species of single-stemmed palms from volcanic or limestone soils in forest, from sea level to 700m (2,300ft), on the Mascarene Islands, E. of Madagascar. They have erect trunks, swollen at the base or middle, topped by a cluster of pinnate leaves above a prominent crownshaft. Bowl-shaped, 3-petalled flowers are borne in solitary panicles beneath the lowest leaf. In frost-prone areas, grow in a warm greenhouse or conservatory; elsewhere, use in a courtyard garden or as lawn specimens.
