description_en: Genus of 12 or more species of perennial succulents from desert-like areas of the West Indies, Central America, and N. South America. Dense clusters of long, fleshy leaves are borne in terminal or basal rosettes. In summer, each rosette produces a large, terminal, pyramidal panicle bearing broadly bell-shaped, pendulous, diurnal flowers. Small, adventitious plantlets often form between the flowers. Where temperatures drop below 7°C (45°F), grow in a temperate greenhouse; in warmer climates, use in a desert garden or as specimen plants.
