Description en: Genus of one species of deep-water aquatic perennial, often treated as an annual, that occurs in still and slow-moving water in Asia. One of the world’s largest aquatic plants, it has large, floating, rounded, thorny leaves, and shuttlecock-like flowers, each stem and calyx covered with stiff prickles. In all but tropical areas, grow E. ferox in a large pool in a warm greenhouse.

Propagation en: Sow seed singly in 8cm (3in) containers in spring. Submerge in water at 21-23°C (70-73°F), so that the tops of the containers are just under the surface.

Comment ja: 分子系統樹ではNymphaeaに含まれることが判明した。APW参照。POWOではVictoria とともに本属を認めていて、Nymphaea のほうを分割する見解かと思ったが、そうではなく、理由は不明。
