They have large, paddle-shaped leaves growing from trunk-like pseudostems, which are formed by the bases of the old leaf-stalks. Cup-shaped flowers are produced in pendent, terminal inflorescences among large bracts. Fruits are banana-like but dry and unpalatable. In frost-prone areas, grow in a temperate greenhouse, or plunge outdoors during summer to provide subtropical effects in summer bedding. In frost-free climates, grow as specimen plants or in a courtyard.
