description_en: Genus of 12 species of submerged aquatic perennials occurring in fresh water from North America to sub-tropical South America. The erect, spreading stems and lance-shaped to linear or ovate, bright green leaves, borne in whorls of 3, provide excellent cover for fish fry; they are also good oxygenators. Tiny, solitary flowers are produced within axillary spathes. Grow in a garden pond; the less vigorous species are suitable for an aquarium.
