description_en: Genus of 4 species of evergreen, rhizomatous perennials from tropical rainforest in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Sumatra. The rhizomes produce erect, reed-like shoots with 2 ranks of linear to lance-shaped leaves. Separate, horizontal flowering shoots, bearing large-bracted spikes of lipped, 3-petalled flowers, are followed by spherical or ellipsoid seed capsules. The only widely cultivated species, E. cardamomum, produces aromatic fruit used as a spice. It needs tropical conditions to fruit well, but in temperate regions is still an attractive foliage plant for a warm greenhouse. In frost-free areas, grow in a shady bed or border.
