description_en: Genus of 3 species of tuberous perennials from the Mediterranean, Madeira, and the Canary Islands found on waste ground, rocky areas, and hill-sides, with pedate, sometimes white-mottled, dark green leaves. They are grown for their distinctive but foul-smelling, often very large, flat or curved spathes, borne in spring or summer. Although not reliably hardy, they grow well in open glades in sheltered woodland or at the base of a sunny wall.
